52 halfs in 52 weeks – amazing achievement by Chris Obrien
Chris a 48yr old, ‘fat police detective from Burnley’, (as he put it) with a long suffering fiancé (Sarah) who will be glad that she can now approach the washing basket knowing she won't be overwhelmed by the smell of sweaty running kit! Has just completed an epic 52 half-marathons in 52 weeks! This is equivalent to running from Portsmouth on the South Coast of England all the way to Glasgow and back again!
We caught up with Chris after his final run:
“The final run went well, I set off at 7am in the dark, running on ice, and managed to survive the 10mile run to the start line of the 5k race in Burnley that would complete my half marathon. The Reception from the other runners was amazing, and will stay with me for a long time. They even had another collection bucket already set up for me!!
I Started at the back of 282 runners, intending to have a well-earned rest, but after half way got fed up and decided to make a race of it, and ended in 72nd position at the end, passing over 200 people.
The event has been eventful, painful, and emotional. Lots of injuries (including a bad muscle tear when I fell off my skateboard, a trapped nerve, and a shoulder injury), The drama didn’t stop with injuries on one run I had to help rescue a drowning man (he survived and went home after being in a coma!).
Looking forward to my rest now before I find another challenge. Fundraising is going well, and is likely to be around £2500"
