16-year-old Daniel from Wales is a self-confessed “cricket fanatic” who loves everything about the game. Passionate about cricket for over five years, Daniel plays for both a local team and at county level, as well as watching as many games as he can.
Daniel had to stop playing when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, affecting his arm. He underwenttreatment, but this gave him limited movement during the recovery period. Daniel has “always” dreamed of seeing England play Australia in the famous Ashes series. He said it would help his recovery no end!
Daniel’s cricketing dream came true when he travelled down to London with his family for an experience he won’t forget for a while – the third day of the second Ashes test at “the home of cricket” Lords!
Daniel and his family spent the weekend in a “lovely” apartment near the O2, and on the Friday met up for a meal with a friend over from New Zealand, who used to play in Daniel’s cricket team. Daniel enjoyed the O2 so much that his family ate there again the next day!
On the Saturday, Daniel’s mum, sister and nephew went shopping whilst Daniel headed off to Lords with his father, Howard. He enjoyed travelling by the tube on the way - something he’s never done before!
Daniel’s dream day started with a private tour of Lords’ media box, which soon turned into a meeting with “the Legends of cricket”, as Daniel described them! There were too many to name, but Geoff Boycott, David Gower, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Glen McGrath,
Brett Lee and Mark Butcher were some of the highlights. In fact, Daniel’s dad had a dream came true too when the pair met Ian Botham, because he is Howard’s all-time favourite cricketer!
Daniel and Howard were given complimentary hospitality tickets for the game, which included seats in the Thomas Lord Suite, plus a three course lunch, afternoon tea and a complimentary bar. They even shared a table at lunch with the family of England’s captain and opening batsman, Alistair Cook! What was Daniel’s verdict?
“To meet some of the greatest players in history was an experience I will never forget. It felt
like the players came to meet me. I had to pinch myself a few times because I
thought it was all a Dream, the atmosphere was ELECTRIC – a ground that had 28,000 fans felt like 50,000 fans, the stands were roaring, the atmosphere felt like we were watching football– it was that loud. I loved the match, it was definitely something I will never forget.” Daniel
