What a great dream to have! I hope her dream comes true very soon x
Lily-Clare, from Kent, lives with a serious lung condition, immune deficiency and scoliosis. With a lifelong passion for horse-racing, Lily-Clare dreams of experiencing a day in the life of a real jockey.
When Lily-Clare was just three years old, she became poorly with a severe chest infection. After countless trips to the doctor, she was finally sent to the local hospital where she was diagnosed with a rare condition: Bronchiectasis. This is a long-term disease where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection. Since then, Lily-Clare has also experienced permanent collapse of the bottom of her right lung as well as Asthma and Scoliosis.
Despite the antibiotics that Lily-Clare takes on a regular basis, immune deficiency makes her highly susceptible to frequent illness. Her mother, Elane, explains that the past four months have been especially difficult due to her daughter’s ongoing chest infections. Emergency trips to the hospital have been frequent, and Lily-Clare has already missed a year’s worth of schooling.
Despite the difficulties she endures on a regular basis, Lily-Clare’s lifelong passion—horse-racing—has kept her spirits strong. She says, “I took my first horse-riding lesson on my fourth birthday and have practiced twice a week ever since. When my mum asked me what my biggest dream was, I immediately said that I wanted to know what it was like to be a real jockey, riding a race horse in front of lots of people”.
Elane explains that having this dream fulfilled around Christmas this year would mean the world to Lily-Clare: “For a couple of days, Lily-Clare could experience what it’s like to simply live a normal life where she can do what she loves without constant interruptions. Not only that, but she could also do something that nobody in her class has ever done. She could then finally say, ‘I can do it. I’ve had my dream fulfilled!’”. Lily-Clare’s passion for horseracing is so strong that she is determined to become a real jockey when she grows up.
