8-year-old Fred has Microcephaly, a brain condition which affects development, meaning children with this condition have a smaller sized head. Fred attends regular appointments for cognitive development tests and he also has a rare DNA disease. Fred finds it hard to get around places and he can be quite wary in unfamiliar environments, so it can take him a long time to settle.
When Fred’s Mum asked what him what he wanted to do he said he wanted to see really deep snow and mountains. The family went to Austria, a place that is special to Fred’s parents as they had been there before they had a family.
“Fred has always wanted to explore the mountains and the pine forests that cloak it. Where better than the friendly Austrian Alps! A happy place where Dave and I were engaged and spent many happy summer and winter breaks exploring the same forests.
This was our first family holiday abroad. The first time the children had used their passports. The first time away for more than a few days. I won't deny it - we were pretty apprehensive and stressed by the thought of it. A heap of "What if's" filled our minds. Our Dream Co-ordinator, Michelle, supported us through our What If's as we realized it was more, What If We Don't....The flexibility Dreams Come True gave us ensured we made the most perfect bespoke holiday for Fred. We were happy staying in a place we knew and that was safe for Fred's needs.
We travelled by train from York to the Austrian Alps, soaking up the atmosphere along the way. We arrived in Westendorf as darkness fell. As the sun rose we were treated to a blanket of fresh snow and a mountain vista. After a feast for breakfast and quick snowman making mission we were off to explore the mountain by the best way possible, a sledge! As we ascended by cable car the children couldn't quite believe how we would sledge down a mountain. Imagining a steep peak and rather hasty descent! All the imaginings of mountains as a triangle faded away as we truly explored the ‘mountainess’ of a mountain. Fred exclaimed – ‘It’s a whole mountain world up here. Look we are above the clouds.’ As we began our descent Fred actually said it’s a dream come true!
We were sad to leave our Austrian home from home. It gave us so much as a family; shared memories, conquering fears and anxiety, new skills and experiences and a thirst for more adventures. Thank you Dreams Come True for making it happen,” Karen.
